One of the worst ghosts of the Old Town is undoubtedly the spirit of the old Templar knight. If you dare go into the narrow Liliová Street near Anenské Square at midnight, be very careful. You might hear the hollow thud of horse hooves. Suddenly, a giant white horse with flames shooting from its nostrils will appear before you.
On its back sits a terrifying rider. He wears a white crusader cloak with a large red cross. Instead of a head, however, he only has an empty neck. He holds his severed head firmly under his arm. Unfortunately, no one knows today for what sin he was actually sentenced. People only whisper that he was a very evil and proud man who ended up on the executioner’s block for his deeds.
Since then, his black soul finds no peace. That is why he is cursed and has had to appear for centuries. He jumps out of the darkness and rides through the narrowest alleys. He likes to scare lonely drunks and night travelers with his shouting and wild horse galloping. Despite his terrifying appearance, this ghost does not actually physically harm anyone. He appears rather just for amusement and the joy of someone else’s fear.
According to old legends, there is only one way to free the unhappy knight forever and send him to heaven. But it requires tremendous courage. A single and completely fearless young man must attempt it. He must wait on the street at night for the horse phantom to appear. He steps in its way and must not yield a single step. As the knight rides past, the young man must slip a small blackthorn flower right under his cloak. This simple good deed would free the Templar. So far, however, no one brave enough has been found in Prague.
