The Knights of Blaník and the Sleeping Army in the Mountain

Blaničtí rytíři a spící vojsko v hoře

Not far from Prague rises the mysterious Blaník mountain. It looks like any other hill in the Czech landscape. Inside, however, according to an old legend, an entire huge army of sleeping knights is hidden. They are waiting there for the moment when the Czech land is at its worst. Then, the Blaník mountain will supposedly crack open and the knights will ride out on their horses.

The army is led by Saint Wenceslas himself. He sits on a white horse and holds a spear in his hand. Around him sleep hundreds of faithful armed knights in full armor. Their horses stand quietly beside them. Their swords are ready and shields polished. None of them moves. They sleep under a deep spell for many long centuries.

According to legend, the mountain opens once every hundred years. On that night, brave pilgrims can peek inside. They see long rows of motionless warriors illuminated by a faint golden light. They hear the quiet breathing of horses. The air inside the mountain smells of old metal and leather. But no one must touch anything. Whoever would wake the knights prematurely would bring great misfortune upon the land.

The legend says that the knights will ride out of Blaník only at the moment when the Czech nation is in the absolutely greatest mortal danger. At that moment, the mountain will crack with a huge rumble. Saint Wenceslas will ride out first on his famous white horse. Behind him, his entire mighty army will charge out. Together they will then defeat all enemies and save the Czech land. After victory, they will return back to the mountain and fall asleep again. Blaník will quietly close behind them once more.
